I love ice cream. I love chocolate. And frankly, almost anything is better with sprinkles. Hand-dipped ice cream cones are an easy way to dress up a classic summer treat and will be the hit of any party with kids or ice cream lovers. It takes about an hour including melting the chocolate and letting the finished cones harden in the fridge. They can be made in advance and you can involve the kiddos. If you do, you may need more sprinkles than listed below. (At least if your kids are like mine.)
Ingredients
- 12 sugar cones (one package)
- 4 ounces of semi-sweet baker's chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate chips or chocolate candy melts
- Sprinkles -- jimmies, nonpariels, quins or a combination (more details below)
Directions
Before melting the chocolate, pour the sprinkles into small work bowls and lay out wax paper on a cookie sheet for cooling.
Step 1: Melt the chocolate in a double-boiler on the stove or in the microwave . If you're melting it in a double-boiler, mix the chocolate the whole time to avoid scorching. If you're melting it in the microwave, cook for 30 seconds, then stir. Repeat until melted.
Step 2: Take a cone and gently dip it in the melted chocolate. I use a knife to spread more of the chocolate on the outside of the cone. (Alternately, you could use a deeper bowl and just dip the cone so it's coated equally inside and outside.) Lightly dip the end of the chocolate covered cone into the first color of sprinkles. After that, sprinkle the rest of the cone with whatever combination you'd like. Set on the waxed covered cookie sheet and once you've made all 12 cones, place in the fridge for 20 minutes to harden. They'll store in the refrigerator for about a week.
Step 3: Add ice cream and kids! (Don't forget napkins…)
Ombre Cones
Nonpareils: 1 ounce of 3 different colors of nonpareils
Jimmies: 2 ounces of 3 different colors of jimmies
Rainbow Cones
Nonpareils: 1 ounce of 6 different colors of nonpareils
Jimmies: 2 ounces of 6 different colors of jimmies (I used red, orange, yellow, lime green, blue and purple)
Confetti Cones
1 ounce of nonpareils
3 ounces of confetti quin sprinkles (I used our pastel quins and white nonpareils)
You may need more sprinkles (or less) than I used depending on how you decorate them. Save the extras for ice cream sundaes!
